It's The Real Me

It’s The Real Me:
The grimy steel barrel of the gun in his hands was the last thing I saw before; I felt the warmth of the bullet piercing my skin. It was seconds before unconsciousness took me under its spell, and the dreams crept upon me.

Those College Days:
Well Hello, My name is Natalie Duran. Glad you decided to read my story, it’s not an all-around happy tale, it’s sad, it can make you angry, it may even cause tears, but my story needs to be told. So sit back and I hope you stay till the end, let me know how it ends. Now where to begin this tale, oh yeah, how about the day when my life would change forever. The first day of College, should be exciting for a lot of students, but for me, it scared the living hell out of me. Little did I know that the events of this day would send my world into a dark place, well to continue? I was freaking out, hyperventilating into a paper bag when my best friend, Tasia, walked over and helped me control my breathing. I really thought I was going to pass out.
“Nate, you really need to calm down, it’s not that big of a deal!” Tasia whispered.
How was I supposed to calm down when the first day of college was going to begin in less than an hour? I mean I got hot college guys everywhere, a weirdo roommate, and I missed my mom. See I was accepted to Astro City University, a great school about fifty miles from my hometown of Superior. It was a new experience for me, but luckily my two best friends since middle school both got accepted to the same school. Tasia Jones and Dwyane Mendez were my best friends, and I loved them dearly. Tasia is a sassy in your face black girl, with great style, and Dwayne is a laid back Puerto Rican jock, who owns more shoes than anyone I know. Anyways, I got myself together, grabbed my book bag, and took Tasia by the hand. We headed toward Starhill Hall, to see if Dwayne was up and ready for basketball practice. The gym was on our way to our first class, so we offered to be his alarm clocks. We knocked on his door, and he opened it with a huge grin. He was obviously happy about something; he gave us both hugs, and invited us in. We sat on his bed while he finished getting ready. See my besties and I had no shyness around each other. We openly got dressed and undressed around each other, well only to our undergarments. Except today, Dwayne’s roommate Joseph was there and he were pounding furiously on the keyboard of his computer. I looked over at him, and he stopped typing and stared at me strongly. I mean I’m not that great looking, but I mean I’m pretty I guess. I stand at 5’4, with waist length black hair, and green eyes that are my best feature. I’m not too skinny but I’m not fat, I weigh around 135 pounds respectively, I wasn’t exactly athletic. Well the way Joseph stared at me kind of gave me chills; it was a tad bit scary. I rushed Dwayne and Tasia out the door, and headed to the gym. After we left Dwayne off, I asked Tasia if she noticed how Joseph was staring.
“Not that I saw, I don’t think he moved from his computer screen dude, but I really was paying attention.”
“Well he kind of freaked me out; I mean I only met the guy like twice then at registration.”
“Maybe, He likes you Nate?”
“Eww, gross Joseph is not my type at all.”
“Well what is your type?”
Just as she asked, my crush Josh Dominguez ran by.
“That’s my type, Tasia!”
She looked at him and smiled.
“Nate, that’s James D. Hes only the captain of the basketball team, Hes a junior, and Hes one of the hottest guys in school, no way is he paying attention to little ole us!”
She was always a buzz kill, I shrugged my shoulders and we took off for our Business 101 class. What a bore that class was. Worst hour of my life, or so I thought!
So He Falls For Me:
Well I got through the first month of classes pretty easily. Not too long ago I was freaking out, but I was actually finding college very fascinating. I spent most of economics doodling, and all of my physics class staring at James D. I mean the guy was dreamy. He was at least 6’3, built like a Greek god; he had black brown hair, and eyes as black as coal. Dude had it going on in all the right places. Geez I sound like some crush obsessed high schooler. Just then the class was dismissed, and I was so flustered I tripped and fell down on my butt. It hurt really badly, I got up and grabbed my bag, and headed towards the nurses office. I was almost there when Tasia ran up alongside of me.
“Now what did you do?”
“I fell on my butt in class, so I’m going to get an ice pack.”
“Ha, how did you manage that?”
“I guess I wasn’t paying attention and tripped.”
“Well geez, slow down woman, your breakable sweetie!”
I laughed and that made my backside hurt more, so I shrugged it off and kept walking.
“Does this mean you’re coming with me?”
“I guess so; I have nothing else to do!”
Once in the nurse’s office, I signed in and told the nurse what had happened, she told me to take a seat then she’d call me back. I grabbed one of the many gossip magazines and flipped through the pages. Then I heard Tasia gasp, so I looked up and saw Dwayne and Robert bringing, James into the office. He was bleeding from the nose, and unconscious. We all stood up and ran over to help. The nurse was rushing to clean off a bed to lay him on.
“What happened to this boy?” she asked.
Dwayne replied “Someone attacked him in the Starhill Hall; we got there just as the guy ran off.”
I felt such a pain as I helped the nurse clean the area around his nose so she could see the break. Tasia called an ambulance, during the commotion, and the EMT’s were arriving. They strapped James to a gurney, and were rushing out the door, when they asked who was coming with him to the emergency room. I yelled out “I will!” I have no idea where that came from but it felt right. So ran along the EMT’s and into the back of the ambulance. Tasia looked at me like what are you thinking, and Dwayne had a look of worry on his face. I waved to them, and then took James’ hand. It was a quiet ride. James got checked in to a room, and the doctor came in to fix his nose. he positioned himself over James, and with one quick crunch he corrected James’ nose. That woke James up, he yelled loudly.
“What the hell was that for?”
The doctor replied “I had to fix your nose, you were attacked, and your nose took a beating. It had to be set quickly.”
“Give a guy some warning!”
I said “You were unconscious!”
“What are you doing here?” he asked
“I rode with you in the ambulance to make sure you were alright. Dwayne and Robert found you in Starhill hall after you were attacked, they brought you to the nurse’s office.”
“Oh well thank you, Michelle.”
“The names Natalie, but you can call me Nat.”
He turned bright red and apologized for the mistake.
“You’re the girl who’s in my physics class?”
“Yeah that would be me.”
We sat in silence as the doctor bandaged his nose, and examined the x-ray of his ribs, that fortunately were just bruised not broken. He gave James pain medication, and instructions to avoid basketball practice for a week.
“Well that just sucks don’t it, what am I going to do for a week?”
“Not sure, but it’s not the end of the world.”
“I guess you’re right, but basketball is my all, it’s my future.”
“It may be your profession but I don’t think it’s your life. You can be so much more.”
The doctor came back in the room then and released us to go. I offered to pay for the cab back to campus, but he started walking, so I followed along. We walked in silence with me a good distance away from him. He walked pretty fast for being on pain medication. I kind of started jogging to keep up with the guy. Thankfully it’s only, a couple of miles back to campus. I finally caught up with James, but seriously out of breath. He looked down at me, and smiled.
“What are you doing shorty?”
“Walking to campus, I guess.”
“Well good job keeping up, short stuff.”
“Hey I’m not that short okay, maybe to your giant self, but gee I’m pretty average height.”
“Aww man, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings at all.”
“You didn’t hurt my feelings; I know how to stand on my own.”
“Well look at little ole you, my bad I didn’t know you were like that?”
“Exactly, you don’t even know me.”
“Well we got awhile, so let me get to know you shorty?”
I smiled shyly, and kicked a couple of pebbles.
“I guess so, what do you want to know?”
“Okay so your name is Natalie?”
It was a great walk, we talked the entire time, and we learned each other’s likes and dislikes. We talked about basketball, our love lives, and our family. But the walk eventually came to an end, and we said our goodbyes.
What exactly are we doing? :
It had been one week since James attack, and I haven’t seen any sign of James at all. I constantly bug Dwayne with questions about how James was, but he always said the same thing.
“No, Natalie again I haven’t seen or heard from him, why don’t you go to his dorm its like four doors down from mine?”
“Because I don’t know how to explain why I’m showing up at his door in the middle of the day.”
“I don’t think he’s even left his dorm room, to be honest Nate.”
Hmm, maybe I’ll head over there later…I was interrupted by someone screaming my name.
“Natalieeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”
I turned around and saw James running down the corridor towards Dwayne and me. He caught up pretty quickly to us, and tried to catch his breath. At least his nose was healing well.
“James, what’s wrong?”
“Dwayne, could I have a minute alone with Natalie please?”
Dwayne left us alone but stayed a safe distance away to wait for me. James looked nervous, but then he sucked in some air and kissed me. I mean he pulled me by the waist and kissed me. I wasn’t hesitant; he nibbled my lip and smiled. I smiled and turned bright red.
“What was all that about, James?”
“I wanted to do that since last week when we walked.”
“Okay, well geez do you always go around campus kissing girls or what.”
“No, its not like that Natalie, that day confused me, I mean I never felt so liberated when I talked to someone. I never talk to anyone like the way I talked with you, and if you give me a chance I really would like to take you out Saturday?”
“I guess I could go out Saturday, pick me up around 6, Dorm Room 234.”
I walked away, grabbed Dwayne by the collar of his jacket, and rushed out of the corridor, before James could say anything else.
“What the hell was that Natalie, why did James kiss you like that?”
“He said he liked me!” I barely whispered lightly touching my lips as I talked.
“What, are you insane, if Katerina finds out, you’re toast!”
Ohmugod, I completely forgot about Katerina, James’ ex-girlfriend. She is one crazy bitch, she rules the school with her little minions. Shes 5’6 with long painted nails, Short black hair, and brown eyes that could freeze you where you stand. She’s the dean’s daughter so she gets away with everything

In Death We Love Chapter 1 Preview!! Need Feedback!

Chapter #1:

People chatting, bright lights shining,a distant smell of alcohol, are all Natalie remembers, on the sunny August day. She opens the blinds, to reveal the sunlight to the dark hospital room. Natalie has spent the last two weeks in room 213 at North Suburban Medical Center. She's memerized every ceiling spec, every tile pattern, and she's even counted the drips of the IV hookup. As the sunlight illuminates the room, she hears a moan from the bed. She woke him up. Him being her reason for living. Darren Medina, is Natalie's boyfriend of 5 years. He was the reason she sat in the lounge chair in room 213. Darren had been diagonsed with advanded Stage 3 Leukemia, about 2 years ago. In the last two weeks, it has taken a turn for the worst. Natalie knew Darren suffered, but he did it quietly. He never showed weakness with her around. Natalie loved that he tried so hard, but in reality she knew just how much he was hurting. Darren always reminded her of her strentgh, but Natalie always thought it was the effects of the chemothearapy. In the last two weeks, Darren suffered two bone marrow transplants, and a splenectomy. He pushed so hard to live, but everyone around him, witness the very life he cherished leave his body slowly.

It was now the middle of August, Summer was almost over. Most students were getting prepared for the approaching school year. Natalie and Darren's friends were getting ready to attend colleges all over the world. It seemed to make Darren feel down everytime a friend came to visit. It seemed somehow inside he knew it might be the end. But a light gleam in his eye gave hope. The lights were dimmed for the evening, and Natalie sighed as she curled up in the bed beside Darren, careful not to disrupt the IV drip. As she snuggled close they chose a movie to watch, Psycho, Darren's favorite 1960's movie. As the opening credits rolled, Darren gripped Natalie's slender fingers and wrapped them in his. He inhaled, and as he exhaled, he spoke softly "I love you, Natalie." In the blink of an eye, as he took his last breath, the world seemed to stop. The only thing to wake Natalie out of her daze, was the sound of the flatline. The only thing that kept her going was turning cold beside her. As soon as she rose, the doctors came flooding in, pushing Natalie aside. The tears began to roll as she collapsed to the cold tile floor. A rip had just torn her fragile heart into a million pieces of pain.

In the next few days, plans for the funeral were drawn up, people were grieving, and the worst had yet to come. Natalie never left the comfort of her bed. After all she had spent so many restless moments lying in her tears over the last 3 days. She felt aches throughout her entire body, from her head to her toes. She pulled herself up and with the last bit of her energy she placed on her slender frame, a simple black dress. She felt hollow as she walked into the daylight to brace the faces of those she loved. She found her way to the steps of the church. She followed the crowd to the front of the aisle, where the cherry wood coffin now held the body of her boyfriend, her best friend, her lover, and her soul mate. She traced his lips with her shaking fingers, and collapsed in sorrow in front of the entire procession. Only to be lifted by the arms of Darren's brother, Jacob. He held her up tightly as she sobbed into his blazer. The sobbing continued to Darren's final resting place. Natalie had stepped up to place the whitest of roses on the cherry wood surface. It saddened her to think that his cold silent body was to stay there while she continued to live. She thought about this the past few days, just couldnt bring the courage to do it. She tried and tried to control the sobs, as Jacob guided her away from the crowd. He eased her into his car, and drove away from the pain he , himself could no longer hide.

No one could quite stomach the reason Darren was taken at the age of twenty. Darren was strong, althletic, compassionate, and very loving. After graduation he took over the family music store, Dizzy Tunes. He loved his job, and took so much pride in how hard he worked. He was 6'1 with Jet black hair, and the greenest eyes. Natalie would never forget his face no matter how hard she tried. Silent whispers, coughing elders, and grieving faces surround the Medina household. The Medina's lived in a yellow victorian-era home in Thornton. The home was very comforting to Natalie as she stood next to Mrs.Medina, as they received condoloscenes for their loss.

A line began to form, as one person to the next, gave the same ol' "Im Sorry." Natalie felt a knot in her stomach, she knew that all the sorry's in the world could not take away the pain she felt deep into her soul.Hours and hours drug on before guests began to clear the small home. During the commotion, Natalie had fallen asleep in the navy blue recliner in the now silent living room. Careful not to disturb her, Jacob lifted her up and carried her to Darren's unattended bed. As he laid her down, a chill swept over the room. He left quietly and stepped into the backyard. He lifted his head to the starry sky. He sighed and leaned his shoulder on the trunk of an old oak.It seemed as if he was resting his burdens for mere seconds, even though it was a major relief to have them lifted. A eerie feeling crept over Natalie as she stirred, she awoke with a jump as she realized her surroundings. She wept for a few minutes then wiped her tears with the quilt that was wrapped at her legs. She wandered in the dark room until she found her way to the double glass doors, only to see Jacob outside. She opened the door to reveal the cold breeze at her bare feet. She walked towards the old oak tree, when Jacob turned to see her standing there. She seen the pain in his eyes, as tears welled up. She walked over to him and took his hand in hers, as she asked him " Do you think he's still with us,Jacob?"

He took a deep breath in before he answered " Im not sure Nate, but i hope so." At the same time they lifted their heads to the sky and whispered " We love you, Darren." They smiled ever so slightly before heading back inside.

The day after the funeral, it was time to take Natalie home. As Jacob drove, so many thoughts and images swirled through his brain, he swerved off the road quite a few times. The drive was silent, since neither him or Natalie could stand the sound of music. As he pulled to a stop in front Pinecrest Apartments, he threw the car into park and killed the ignition. He stepped out wondering why he agreed to what he was about to do. He agreed to stay a week in the apartment with Natalie. He wasnt quite sure why he agreed, he thought it was because neither of them deserved to be alone, or if it was from pity. They walked through three apartment buildings before reaching building C. Climbing the set of stairs to the second floor, reaching apartment 213, Natalie stops to collect herself and unlock the door. As they enter the tiny apartment, they're pushed back by the smell of cherries, roses, and a small hint of Old Spice body spray.

Jacob went on to turn on the light switch, illuminating the apartment. Natalie sighed as she took a seat in the slump old couch. She remembers the day they found the couch; it was like it was yesterday:

Darren, had been driving around all day for garage sales, as soon as they gave up for the day, fate happened and on the next corner an older couple was laying out furniture on the corner. Darren slammed on the breaks and got out of the car. He hurried over to the couple and asked them if the couch was free, and they replied yes! Damn were they in luck. Darren loaded the green moss-colored couch onto the back of his F-150 and drove home. Natalie couldn’t believe their luck.

She quietly remembered those memories as she fiddled with the threads on the left arm rest. She felt a sense of peace as she curled up to turn on the television. Jacob came to sit down as they witnessed what they had missed over the last couple of days.

ONE OF MY FIRST POEMS I WROTE:
Your hand touches my thigh, the shivers are unbearable
as i surrender to your control
Your grip tightens, as i grab the sheets,
our breathing gets heavy as we get heavy
we get closer to our desire, our flow

increasing as our bodies come closer. My nails dig deep
into the ruffled cotton of gown, my legs lock up and the heat rises
as you take your last deep thrust a climax so strong, a scream
escapes my throat with such intensity, again your hand touches my thigh and
it begins again... Its just a lust thing.
